A drywall take-off is just total board area divided by sheet size, plus a margin for waste — and then the finishing materials that follow from the area. The number that trips people up is not the sheet count but the mud and tape, so the calculator estimates those from the same area.
1. Add up the wall area
Wall area is the room perimeter times the ceiling height: 2 × (length + width) × height. For a 14 × 12 room with 8-foot ceilings that is 2 × 26 × 8 = 416 ft² of wall before any openings. This calculator does not subtract doors and windows — that overage is your built-in cut allowance.
2. Add the ceiling if you are hanging it
A hung ceiling adds length × width — 168 ft² for that same room. Toggle it off if the ceiling is already finished or you are only patching walls, and the sheet count drops accordingly.
3. Divide by sheet size and add waste
Divide the total area by 32 ft² for 4×8 sheets, or 48 ft² for 4×12, then add about 10% for cuts and breakage and round up to whole sheets. Bigger sheets mean fewer seams to tape — often the better trade on long walls and ceilings even though they are heavier to carry.
4. Estimate mud, tape, and screws
Figure roughly a gallon of joint compound per 100–110 ft², about 0.4 linear feet of tape per square foot, and around one screw per square foot. These are shopping ballparks — the real number moves with how many coats you pull and whether you texture.

- A rough rule is about one gallon of ready-mix joint compound per 100–110 ft² of drywall for tape plus three finishing coats, and roughly 0.4 linear feet of tape per square foot of board.
