Sod is measured by area but delivered by the roll, slab, and pallet, so the take-off is area, a small margin for cuts, and a conversion to whichever unit your farm sells. The one thing hand estimates skip is the waste for curves and beds — leave it out and you come up a few pieces short.
1. Measure the lawn area
For a rectangular lawn, area is length × width in feet. For a round area it is π × radius². Break irregular yards into rectangles and circles, calculate each, and add them together.
2. Add about 5% for cuts and curves
Every bed, walkway, and curved edge means cutting a piece and discarding the offcut, so order roughly 5% over your measured area. Yards with lots of curves or obstacles justify a bit more.
3. Convert to rolls or slabs, then pallets
Divide the area-with-waste by your unit’s coverage — about 10 sq ft per roll or 2.67 sq ft per slab — and round up. Sod is delivered on pallets covering roughly 450 sq ft, so the calculator also shows pallets, the unit the farm loads on the truck.
