Grout only fills the joints between your tiles, so the honest number is the exact volume of those joints — not a rule of thumb. Coverage per bag then varies by brand and type (sanded, unsanded, and epoxy all yield differently), which is why every bag prints its own coverage chart. This calculator gives you the exact joint volume and turns it into bags using the yield you enter, so nothing is hidden and the bag’s own chart stays the source of truth.
1. Measure the tiled area
Measure the surface you are grouting in square feet — length times width of the tiled area. That is the footprint every joint runs across, so it drives the total joint length.
2. Note tile size and joint width & depth
Enter the tile length and width, the joint width (1/8 in is common), and the joint depth (usually the tile thickness). Larger tiles and tighter joints mean far less grout, so these numbers matter as much as the area.
3. Compute the joint volume
Joint length per square foot is (tile length + tile width) ÷ (tile length × tile width); multiply by joint width, joint depth, and 144 to get cubic inches per square foot, then by your area and divide by 1,728 for cubic feet. The calculator does this exact geometry live.
4. Match to the bag’s yield chart
Every grout bag prints a coverage chart for your tile size and joint. Read the ft³-per-bag (or convert the chart’s square-foot figure) and enter it — the calculator divides the exact joint volume by that yield and rounds up to whole bags. Confirm the yield against the bag.

- How much grout do I need?
- It comes down to the exact volume of your grout joints — the length of joint per square foot times the joint width and depth. Larger tiles have less joint per square foot, so they need far less grout than mosaics. This calculator computes the exact joint volume in cubic feet from your tile size, joint width, and joint depth, then divides by the coverage (ft³ per bag) you enter from your specific grout to give a bag count.
- How is grout coverage calculated?
- The geometry is exact: joint length per square foot is (tile length + tile width) ÷ (tile length × tile width), and multiplying that by the joint width, joint depth, and 144 gives the joint volume in cubic inches per square foot. Multiply by your tiled area and divide by 1,728 to get cubic feet. Bag count is that volume divided by your grout bag’s stated yield — which is why the calculator asks you to enter that yield rather than assuming one.
- Does tile size change grout needed?
- A lot. Grout only fills the joints, and larger tiles have far less joint per square foot than small ones. Going from 12-in tiles to a 2-in mosaic can multiply the grout you need several times over for the same floor area. Tighter joints also use less grout. The calculator captures both because you enter tile length, tile width, joint width, and joint depth.
- Sanded vs unsanded — does it change the amount?
- The joint volume is the same, but coverage per bag differs by grout type and brand — sanded, unsanded, and epoxy grouts all yield differently, and a wider or deeper joint drops the coverage.
