How to calculate wall framing

Framing lumber is easy to under-order and easy to over-buy. The field studs are simple arithmetic; the parts crews miss are the plates, the openings, and the corners. Get the base count right, then add for the extras.

1. Count the studs

Take the wall length in inches — length in feet × 12 — and divide by your on-center spacing (16″ or 24″). Add one stud to cap the end of the wall. That is the field-stud count before any openings or corners.

2. Add the top and bottom plates

A standard wall has three plate rows: a single bottom plate and a double top plate. Multiply the wall length by the number of plate rows to get plate linear feet, then divide by your board stock length to see how many plate boards to buy.

3. Allow for openings and corners

Every window and door adds jack and king studs plus cripples; every corner and T-intersection adds studs for drywall backing. Rather than count each one, a 10–15% waste factor covers a typical wall — bump it up on a wall full of openings.

4. Total the lumber

Add the studs (with waste) and the plate boards for the total board count to order. The breakdown above splits studs and plates so you can price each, and drops in a cost if you enter a per-board price.

How many studs do I need for a wall?
Take the wall length in inches, divide by your on-center spacing, and add one for the stud that closes the end of the wall. A 20 ft wall at 16″ on-center is 240 ÷ 16 = 15, plus 1, so 16 studs before extras. Then add studs for each opening (a jack and king on each side), every corner, and every T-intersection. This calculator does the base count and adds a waste factor for those extras.
Is 16-inch or 24-inch on center better?
16″ on-center is the common residential standard — more studs, a stiffer wall, and easier backing for drywall and fixtures. 24″ on-center (advanced framing) uses noticeably less lumber and is allowed for many walls under current code, but check the load and your local code first. The calculator lets you switch spacing and see the stud count change instantly.
How many plates does a wall need?
Most walls use three plate rows: one bottom (sole) plate and a double top plate. So plate lumber is roughly the wall length × 3. This calculator multiplies your wall length by the number of plate rows, then divides by your plate stock length to tell you how many boards to buy.
Why add a waste factor?
The base “length ÷ spacing” count is only the field studs. Every opening adds jack and king studs and cripples, every corner and T-intersection adds studs for backing, and some lumber is culled for crown or splits. A 10–15% allowance covers those so you are not short a stud at the end of the wall.
