How to calculate pavers

Pavers come down to two numbers — the square footage you’re covering and how much one paver covers — plus a little extra for cuts. Get the area right, work out the per-paver coverage from its face size, and add waste, and you order the right pallet instead of coming up short mid-patio.

1. Measure the area

Multiply the patio length by its width in feet for square footage. For an L-shape or a walkway with jogs, break it into rectangles, figure each, and add them up. Measure the finished paved surface, not the excavation.

2. Find each paver’s coverage

Multiply the paver’s length × width in inches and divide by 144 to get square feet per paver. A 6 × 9 in paver covers 0.375 sq ft. The calculator turns that straight into a per-square-foot count for whatever paver you enter.

3. Add a waste factor

Cuts at the borders and the odd cracked unit mean you never use exactly the area you measured. About 10% covers a square layout; bump it to ~15% for herringbone, diagonal, or curved patterns where more pavers get cut.
